GALA 2006
As an opener to the Gala Week we invited the Continental Market to visit us from Thursday 27th July to Sunday 30th July. They were based in the precinct and put on a wide variety of produce. So popular were they that we have already invited them back during the 2007 Gala Week.

The 2006 Thurso Gala Week itself ran from Saturday 5th August until Sunday 13th August.

We were gifted the use of the old Victoria Wines shop by Sir John's Square as a Gala Office which was superb being both fairly central yet also very close to the action for gala night too.

Throughout the week we ran, as always, an extensive programme with only a few events affected by the weather.

For the first weekend we bought over the Viking Jarl of Shetland. They were present at many events, adding their own unique touch to each. They were a great hit with both locals and visitors, and many children will have treasured memories of being photographed with Viking helmets, axes and shields.

On Gala night our Gala Queen (Maxine Whale) and attendants
Stephanie Kelly and Tricia Whitson (shown above) added a touch of glamour, while we had a superb procession comprising the Pipe Band, the Vikings (complete with flaming torches), 11 very well decorated floats and some brilliantly dressed foot collectors. This was followed by the ritual burning of the Viking Longship at the Ellan Bridge car park.

As well as the established Car Treasure Hunt, Whist Drive, Teddy Bear's Picnic, Fashion Show, Bingo, Coffee Morning, Ceilidh & Quiz events, we also put on a Rabbit & Cavie Show, a Family Fun Day, a 3k & 10k Run/Walk, and the grand finale 'The Big Gig' music festival.

Despite some, usually weather related, setbacks during the week the general feedback Was been good with a sum in excess of £14,000 being raised.
